I hate that part. Why is that part always so hard? |
My bike computer reads 59.6 - I am calling it 60 MapMyRide. Take that. |
Bike taking a break, Attean Overlook. |
I was looking forward to the ride back. Because it was mostly downhill with some rollers, I was feeling good about this being a pretty fast 30 miles.
Not so much.
Apparently, on the way up, I was being pushed along by some wind that I just didn't feel (no wonder I felt so solid). On the way back, I was faced with some pretty stiff head and cross winds. There was no coasting down any hill, and I really had to stay on the hood to keep the bike from getting thrown around. It was kind of crazy and a good test of how I can handle those conditions. I guess that is another tool to huck in the tool box come race day.
Anyway, my bike really needed another break, and I needed some more fuel at the Parlin Pond rest area.
Yup, we still have some snow. |
After getting home (kicking myself the whole way for my fueling mistake), the first thing I saw was a carton of freshly baked BIG ginger cookies. I ate 3.
I would show you a picture of them but they are all gone now.
I wiped the crumbs from my face, changed, and went for a 20 minute transition run that I just wasn't into because I didn't fuel properly on the bike. I got it done and learned an important lesson that I thought I already knew - never take fueling for granted.
I hope you all had a great weekend, thanks for reading!

What a beautiful place to ride! That looked like some pretty intense climbing. Way to go! I hear ya about being super excited to be outside. Nice work on only 3 cookies...I might have eaten 6! :)
by the looks of that graph, you had a killer ride! Doesn't it feel so much better to ride outside than on the trainer? I feel like I actually accomplish something when riding outside. :)
"Why is that part always so hard?" - THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!! HAHA :)
I just put some new tires on my road bike on Friday so I know exactly what you dealt with. I accidentally ripped one of my tubes in the process and had to redo the front tire. Grrrr...
Woohoo! Outdoor biking! Boohoo! Poor nutrition :) Gotta learn somehow right? Better now than in
105 days ;)
You've inspired me to get my Lance Armstrong Postal Edition Trek out and pump up the tires and go for a ride this week! Seriously! I'm lazy about biking! I'll swim and run but I'm horrible on the bike.
I do the same with eating and running. Fueling can just be one more thing and I can get lazy about it too! :)
That's awesome. What, baseball season started about two weeks ago you deserve to get out. Nice climb profile too.
BTW are those Conti Gatorskins you are putting on those aero wheels? I don't care, but there is this douche rider that's part of the OC elite cycling crew that gave me a hard time when I had Gatorskins on mine. That said, he is too much of a puss to ride in Maine so you'll be fine. I'll be back home in Boston for a few days next week. Looking forward to it...
i LOVE the toolbox analogy!!!
I know that road you are talking about. We have friends who live in Jackman that we visit and my husband hunts up there (Indian land). That is not an easy route! Great job! Our friends got married at Parlin Pond. Meg and Tom Welch, you know them?
First of all, yay for being able to ride outside!! That first ride back outside is always a great feeling!
Like you, when I went for a ride for the first time I didn't take enough fuel. It was like that part of my training from last year was forgotten! Ugh!! I think that's a lesson neither of us will forget again!
Nice hills you have there!
Glad you could get outside finally.
Maybe it will stay nice out.
I especially liked the pictures of your bike in the snow. Who needs someone around to hold the bike up when you can just stick it in the snow!
Awesome.
That explains it. Jackman? I was waiting outside for you to show up all afternoon!! lol
The wind was a sneaky bugger yesterday-it's all nice and sunny and you think "SWEEET!" and bang! cold, harsh wind.
Great ride Mandy
Congrats on the great ride! I am sure you will have many tools available when you IM Lake Placid!
Let's hear it for outside rides! Woohoo! Not so much for headwind on the return end. Boo!
Glad you got out and took in some great scenery.
so glad you got outside to ride! (I would have eaten the cookies too)
Yeahhhhh for outdoor riding!!! We have been waiting for this for a long, LONG time
Spring has sprung! Be aware though - we just had (hopefully our last) winter storm blow through here last weekend....
wow!!! i thought i put in a lot of miles last week!!! way to go!!! love the toolbox analogy, im constantly adding tools to my toolbox!
I want to have intimate relations with your Bike.
That is all carry on.
better to learn this fueling lesson now than in how many days to go???? I think you forgot to put that into your post. I rely on that you know. still can't get over the snow and holy hills girl! put you on a flat course and be scared!
And if you are like me there is a bit of guilt in scarfing down those cookies. Kind of like you know you need the quick carbs but they are cookies. Internal fighting is abundant in my world.
Glad you got to get out on the road though. Hopefully you are able to do that all the time now.
Yay for finally riding outside! :)
And oh, the nutrition lesson. I learn that probably twice a season at least...
whoa girl, thats a cold ride but so glad you were able to get there! Impressive!
Beautiful snowy landscape.
