Sunday Random Stuff

  • I am getting really excited for my 5 day vacation in Baxter State Park.  I have talked about this place so many times, it is a really special place and I love it in the winter.  You have to work hard to get there, so there is pretty much no one around.
  • Baxter State Park, looking at Katahdin
We have a great crew and an excellent plan, we will be skiing about 60 miles on this trip carrying all of our supplies on our back and sleeping in bunkhouses that have woodstoves and plywood bunks.  John and I have been getting our gear together and are looking forward to it.  Bailey will be staying with my parents eating cheese and pouting for the 5 days we are gone.  I am scheduling some posts for when I am gone.
  • My bike isn't ready yet.  I promise to you bike porn when I get it.  Sorry to be a tease.
  • Every time I swim I come home with a clogged nose.  This doesn't happen to me in the summer, so I am thinking chlorine and my nose are not friends. My team mate Andree suggested nose plugs, so I am going to give it a try and see if it helps.  Jason did make the really good suggestion of using a neti pot post swim, which would be great to try if I wasn't so clogged when I get out of the pool.  Anyone else have this problem?
  • Speaking of swimming, I think I am getting better.  I have gone from 2:20/100yds to 2:00.  I would love to get another 20 seconds of improvement, which I know would happen if I could get to the pool a little more. I have already swam more this winter than all of last winter.  I wish I could go more than once a week, but as I have said before, the pool is a 90 minute drive, and once a week is all I can fit in.
  • Only 181 days until Ironman Lake Placid!
  • It isn't too cold right now, but this is going to be %$#! cold tonight, but warms right back up tomorrow..ha (check out the real feel temps below the big numbers):
This week:
Swim: 2850yds
Bike: 78 miles (I have a 1hr trainer ride tonight, estimating 18-20 more miles)
Run: 18 miles (I have a 3 mile run tonight after my ride.  On the treadmill if it is -23 and feels like -48)

I had the stuffy nose problem REALLY bad for a couple months last winter, but it wouldn't hit me until a couple of hours after the swim. If I swam in the evening, it would wake me up at 1am and I wouldn't be able to breath or get back to sleep for hours! I never figured out how to fix it and the problem eventually went away so I assume they changed something - the chlorine amount they used or something. I did get "some" relief by using nasonex, though.

That really sucks that the pool is so far away. If only you could swim another day a week! That right there would shave off time from your swim.

We know you will be swimming more once the ice melts and the water gets above 40 ;)

BTW- Tagged you for a blog award.

The weather guy said tonight will be the coldest it has been in 6 years here. Not in your range but still freakin' cold.

Enjoy your trip!

Looks like good snow conditions for your ski at Baxter. What is your planned route? O'Malley and I will be in the Park next month.

I'm still drooling over the bike..... nice ride!

Baily can stay with me! That trip you are planning sounds amazing. So very different than anything I have done in my life.

As for the pool being so far away, knowing you, I'm surprised that you don't swim in a nearly frozen lake sans wetsuit. Or, maybe all your lakes are frozen.

What an adventurous trip you have planned! Have a wonderful time and I too have heard great things about Netti Pots although I have not justified the cost yet.

Looks like you are going to have a great trip! Relax and recharge!

My mind cannot even rationalize the severity of the cold that you will be experiencing?

First of al...please take me with you! I don't take up much space :)
What I ahve found (you know me and sinuses) better/easier than a nettie pot is this...

get a bulb syringe at pharamcy 9for babies. Fill mug with warm water with about 1/2 tsp baking soda, and little more NON iodized salt (so it doesn't burn). stand over sink , fill the syringe and shoot it up your nose. It will clear everyting out!! It's great during high pollen season too to clear your nose/head after long ride!

Wowzers. Yeah, I don't do cold haha.

Great training numbers! Keep up the good work, sucks about the stuffy nose post swim, I was going to suggest the netti pot or some decongestants.

I hope that you keep this up. Your distances are great for base building phase!

Looks like a fun trip! Hope you have a great time. I know everyone says it but more time swimming is the best way to get faster! Not sure how long you are there but you could do two swim sessions on a weekend to maximize use of the pool. I think I finallydecided on the airfoil as well will be putting it in next round!

Sounds like a blast! I grew up in Maine and enjoyed many visits, but never in the winter! Move West to beat the cold...it's 65' here just East of San Francisco. I moved out here in '98 and will only go back to Maine to visit on occasion

eek, that's what it's looking like here, too (temperature wise). sounds like an awesome adventure you'll be on to baxter state park, have fun :)

Yep, chlorine intolerance. I think that is what it said when I looked it up. I usually kind of acclimate to it after swimming awhile, but I change pools (yes, different pool new reaction, weird) or don't swim for a spell, I go right back to stuffy, runny noses and sneezing like crazy for about 24 hours. I bought nose plugs but never used them. Sometimes lining the inside of my nose with vaseline helps.

I am so jealous of your trip! That is going to be such an amazing adventure!!

I'm sorry about your snuffed up swimming nose. I've never had that problem, so I'm sorry I can't give you any advice. I hope it goes away though b/c I can only imagine how annoying that must be!
