Then I got home from work and procrastinated even more and diddled around with different projects. Suddenly it was dark and I had to get my run in. So I headed under the bright lights of Caratunk to run the Caratunk Treadmill.
I always kind of dread running this route, the repetitiveness gets to me. But really, it is a nice run and once I get out there I always enjoy it and am happy I did it. It is kind of weird to me how the anticipation or dread of something is almost always way worse than the actual doing of that thing.
It was 6 degrees and dark when I stepped outside for my run, and the roads were covered in about 1 inch or so of packed snow - which is like running in sand. I figure more bang for your buck, right?
Wee, let me waste a little more time before I get running... |
About the Caratunk Treadmill. I have mentioned this a few times before, but the Caratunk Treadmill is what I run when I have to run and it is dark. I have added to it since THIS post to make it a little longer. Really, it is my only option that doesn't involve dodging log trucks. It isn't an actual treadmill, because I am allergic to those deathtraps. Seriously, I am somehow just not coordinated enough to stay on the things. Don't believe me? Read THIS (it is embarrassing story #2).
Done laughing? It is OK, I laugh every time I think about it. Now you understand my treadmill problem. Moving on.
Here is a map of the Caratunk Treadmill, which is really the places in town that are lit up, which adds up to a ~ 3.6 mile loop. So you go back and forth until you get the mileage you want for your run.
Oh. The map, right:
The blue line is the Caratunk Treadmill - where the lights are. |
It isn't as bad as it looks, trust me. |
I thought it would be kind of fun to show you a virtual tour of what I call the Caratunk Treadmill, let you get a really good feel for the run through town. What happened was I ended up with 15 pictures that look kind of like this:
The dark and scary south end of town |
The bright and boisterous north end of town. |
I told you, over active imagination and too much sci-fi.
The moon that the coyotes howl at. |

#1 Way to get out there and get the run in after procrastinating!
#2 I love the worked "diddled". I need to find ways to incorporate it into my daily conversation.
#3 I run hot too. I usually wear gloves at the start, but they come off after a 5-10 minutes. Back in my wild and crazy youth I'd run in shorts until it hit 10* or so. I'm a little bit smarter now :)
#4 Thanks for sharing a few of the Caratunk Treadmill! Doing your runs on that makes you even more of a badass!
A hilly Dreadmill!!!
oh man that's creepy! I am so, so scared of the dark! I used to run in the dark in the country out by where my horse was stabled, then I sprained my ankle on one of those runs and haven't done it since.
Wow! You win the tough award this week! 6 degrees, snow and dark? Way to go!!
You have a way of making the most boring and mundane things so interseting and fun to read. Really, you do.
Me, in this weather, I'm on the deadmill. I like to ski but somehow running in the snow and cold just doesnt work so well for me....
**191**
great photos and agreed ur a total badass - way to get out there and get those miles in
your roads look like mine right now...excited to run this weekend with no snow and get some traction going on!!
D
You are amazing to me. I just need to tell you that! :)
You are a complete badass Mandy!
Way to get it done. I'm sure you're in good enough shape to out run even the most extreme bigfoots!
It's 6 freaking degrees, you don't have gloves, it's practically pitch black, the gnarly elevation profile is "not as bad as it looks". Are you human?
That is awesome. Seriously. I am totally impressed.
You must have some yak trax for traction, right?
Bada$$ for running in that!
"...dodging log trucks." HAHAHAHA! Too funny.
You are freaking hardcore sister. I start whining thinking about going outside to my car to go to the gym to run on the treadmill when it is 6 degrees.
That moon is enough to make Professor Lupin and Jacob mad. I've completely jumped the shark. Must bail.... must bail....
Same issues here in the snowy NE. But it's great when you get out there and there is no wind and the air is fresh.
The dark freaks me out as well. A German Shepherd helps calm the nerves...well...that's until he sees something you CAN'T. Then is gets really scary.
Good job on the run. :) TGIF
That's the only kind of treadmill worth running on! I'm glad that the smoke monster and the "others" let you be.
Thanks for the shout out!
I seriously don't know how you do it.
outside
in the dark
and
snow.
amazing.
Finally someone who understands the no gloves thing! I too run really hot and end up carrying them-if I wore them at all.
Who cares that you diddled? You got out there and rocked it, that's what counts.
I can't believe no gloves- that's crazy! I guess you lose complete feeling after a few bouts of frostbite? lol :)
Seems like a great run! I have an overactive imagination, too. There is always someone chasing me.
I tend to have the procrastination problem too. I'm always glad I *do* my workout, but sometimes it's just tough to get moving. And in *that* weather....no thanks! Good for you getting out there!
You get out there and run and that rawks! I am one of the few treadmill runners in blogland. It is just most convenient for me.
Wow. Just wow. That is some treadmill. I bet you found it on sale. ;-)
I really thought that you were going on a treadmill outside. I was thinking why wear all those clothes to a treadmill run then said oh the treadmill is outdoors so she can enjoy the maine air and watch bailey play in the snow.
Your treadmill is so much better than my imagination's treadmill for you.
I'm not bothered by the cold either! I never wear gloves or a hat, this morning it was 16 degrees when I took my daughter to school, and I just wore a hoodie. : )
I am scared to run in the country on nights with a full moon. No kidding. Once I was running and there was a field full of fireflies and I thought ghosts were chasing me.
No kidding.
Way to go out there and rock it!!!
Your a brave one. Do you pack a 45 when you run... with an extended clip??
M, very cool shots, I loved them. They made me feel like I was there. When I see those shots I see a dedicated person. It's those runs that are the big wins. Nice run.
B
Seriously, I can't believe you run outside when it's that cold. My limit is around 15 or so, and even then, I'm FREEZING! But, being outside is definitely better than a treadmill. You are so hard-core!!
i love that your town has that loop. Although, I would freak out running at night. Looks like a scene from Fargo, eek!
Nice run, you got 'er done.
LC
Yeah! Smoking hotness on the streets! I have a hard time even keeping a shirt on. Happy to see you, Ironman by Thirsty and Molly understand that.
Stupid clothes.
Badass my foot. You make perfect sense Mandy. Nothing supernatural there -as you were.
I love running at night; I have to worry more about the hoodlums than coyotes but my imagination is pretty active as well. Kudos for getting out and getting it done!
Yikes, close call withe the Smoke Monster, he is evil and I am glad you outran him :). I have so many of those days where it's like 9pm and I still need to run...but I'm not as brave as you and head down to my basement to run on the runwithjill treadmill. Nice job, chica!!
As much as I hate, hate, hate the dreadmill I'm so afraid of running outside in the dark! You go girl getting that run done!!
Wow, tough run. Good for you!
