COOKIES! I Mean, Alternative Baking Company Review

I first came across Alternative Baking Company cookies in the local health food store a few weeks ago, and I impulsively picked one up and bought it.  I mean, really who could refuse a giant pumpkin spice cookie?  I got into the car and tore it open (because I am impulsive like that) and started eating.

As I was wiping the crumbs from my face I noticed that the wrapper I had thrown on the floor said things like "vegan" and "organic".  Hmm.  I picked up the wrapper.  I chewed slower and actually started tasting what I was eating...I was in love.  Bailey approved too.  These cookies were pure yumminess!

I also noted, sadly, that the serving size was 2, and that one serving was 220 calories.  Oops.  Another hour on that danged trainer.

In my defense, really, who eats half a cookie?

Anyway, I saved the little piece of cardboard from the cookie container and hopped online.  Wow.  There were lots of flavors.   I sent an email commenting on how much I liked their cookies.  To my surprise, I quickly received an email back with a generous offer to send me a few other flavors to review.

Um, so I get to eat cookies? OK.  But only in the name of scientific study so I can provide information to other interested parties.

That's right, I am only doing this review for you.  

And before I get started - I am doing this review hoping you all don't think I am advocating eating 440-480 calorie cookies (YIKES) on a daily basis.  But as a snack or treat to split with a friend (or two...or three) I think these cookies are a great choice.

Why?

Because Alternative Baking Company Cookies taste great and are :
  • Vegan (no dairy, no eggs, no honey)
  • Trans-fat free (no hydrogenated oils)
  • Cholesterol free
  • Contain no artificial ingredients or refined sugars
  • Are made organic flour and organic sugar
Note: The Classic cookies contain wheat and soy, however, they also make wheat-free cookies in 2 flavors.

Now, I'll admit that I am not even close to a vegan, and had I seen vegan on the packaging when I first picked them up, I might not have picked up the cookie in the first place.   Prior to this cookie, every commercial vegan cookie/muffin/doughnut/etc I had tried tasted like a shredded mixture of cardboard and canola oil. Mmmmm.   

But these are really very good.

I was sent 3 flavors to try:
Like I said before, each cookie contains 440-480 calories, really too many calories for a treat, but really perfect for sharing. These cookies are so generously sized that I was satisfied eating only half the cookie.

The Low-Down (or is it the Down-Low?):
All of the cookies I tried were very moist and chewy.  These cookies were NOT bland or flavorless at all. They did lack the usual “buttery” flavor that homemade cookies have, but I did not mind because the overall taste and texture made up for it.  How do you guys do that?


As far as what I thought about the individual flavors I tried, here is what I think:

Simply Vanilla Bean - These had a very slight vanilla flavor.  It was very tasty, but I really wanted the vanilla flavor turned up.
Double Chocolate Decadence - I ate this whole cookie.  Snort. That should tell you it was really good.  Very chocolaty and good.  The only think I would say is that you could tell by the flavor of the chocolate chips that they are vegan chocolate chips, because their flavor is much more subtle and a little different than a normal chocolate chip.   It was still good though.
Lucius Lemon Poppy - This was like a lemon poppy seed muffin in cookie form.  This was extremely tasty.
 
These cookies are a little on the pricey side ($2/cookie), but when you consider they are really 2 desserts in one package (if you can refrain from eating the whole cookie at once), then it is more reasonable to think about.  And if you are going to eat cookies, I say eat the ones with the best possible ingredients in them.

Yes. I too would like to know WHO onnly eats 1/2 a cookie?!?

But they look like they are worth the double dose!

Thanks Mandy, for taking the caloric bloodbath for all of us, but really, I could have helped with the double chocolate decadence one. Remember only 232 days until IMLP!

Nice Review. Sounds like tasty cookies. I am also impulsive and would have eaten the cookie before leaving the store. I often get stange looks when i hand the cashier an empty package.

Those sound awesome! And, I am totally craving a pumpkin spice cookie right now!

They are high on the calories, but maybe consider eating one as a pre-trainer workout snack. A few weeks ago I was eating cupcakes (leftover from a party) right before getting on the trainer, and I had some of my best workouts in a long time!

I won one of these in SF and didn't realize that the serving was for 2 - opps. But it was very tasty (Lemon Poppyseed!).

So funny! We moved to a small island this past summer with very limited grocery options. Before we moved, one of my bad habits was getting a cookie from the bakery to eat after I'd grocery shopped. Small island = no bakery in tiny grocery store. BUT, they sell the ABC cookies. I gobbled one up after the first market trip and then realized I'd inhaled almost 500 calories in that single cookie. Eeeeeep! Worth it, yes. But I can't even allow myself to buy them now. Maybe once IM training really kicks in... ;)

Damn. And here I was hoping that "serving size of 2" meant that you had to eat two of them for a full serving! haha.

Awesome review! I bet they'd be good race nutrition for longer distances!! Plan on giving them a shot on a long training day?? Bet you'd never be able to eat just half, though!!
