What's Working...

Today I thought I might borrow an idea from Anne Marie at AM Goals for the Week.  Every week she looks at what is working and what is not.  I am hoping she doesn't mind me borrowing her idea, because it is what is on my mind right now. 

What's Working:
  • My coach.  She rocks. I know she hasn't even begun to kick my butt yet, and I know I will be swearing at her at times (you want me to do WHAT?? HOW FAR?? What is this HARD HARD HARD crap? ha ha) All joking aside, getting a coach was probably one of the best decisions I have made - my workouts are for a purpose with ideas in mind heading into each workout, and I get feedback on my key workouts.  
  • Testing. This is still online with the coach, but the HR test I did on my bike on Monday went well (I wouldn't go so far as to say it was FUN, but it is DONE), and now I have my HR zones for the bike.  I have not ever worked with HR zones, and it is really going to help me know what intensity I am suppose to be at in a given workout.  I do a swim test this weekend (to figure out my per/100yd pace to work from.  This should be good and embarrassing, ha ha.), and then my run HR test, which I am really looking forward to. I love that we are working on a baseline of fitness to build on.
  • Running.  I am finally getting my groove back and it feels good.  This was a tough year for me as far as running goes, between fighting injury and then, well, fighting injury.  But right now I am healthy and feeling strong on the run again.  It is really nice to start getting back to where I was before I was injured.

What Needs Some Work: 
  • My nutrition/diet/all the food I stuff into my face. Need I say more?    
  • Well, yes, now that you mention it...actually I do need to say more.    It is hard as hell to live with someone who doesn't have any interest in eating healthy.  I would love to just have healthy stuff in the house, except that I go and buy healthy stuff and someone feels the need to supplement that with goodies like chips and salsa.  Add to this that really there is not many people in my life who really eat healthy, and it is just hard to eat clean.  I am trying, really I am.  I am writing down all that I eat.  I am knitting while watching TV instead of feeding my face. 
    I know, it all comes down to self-control (of which, I have almost none).  I am working on it.  
  • Getting up early.  5am was my workout time all summer.  Sometimes I would go even earlier.  The darkness and cold are making me dive under the covers.  It isn't a big issue right now, because I am getting my workouts in, but will be an issue later.  I am going to work on that as well.
  • This is one I have no control over, but it is something that isn't working for me.  My grandfather is sick.  It isn't working for me at all.  He had an operation this week, and things went OK, but he really is pretty sick and has a few problems going on that I hope are fixable, but we don't know.  He is home now and doing better, but it was the first time I have ever seen this rock solid man start to crumble.  
  • To learn more about him, click HERE.  But to get an idea about who he is without clicking that link - he put up 4-5 cords of wood (for next winter) the week before his operation.  He is 90 years old.  We had planned on doing it while he was getting better, but he had other ideas.
Anyone have anything that is working especially well for them this week?  Anything you really want to work on?  I would love to hear about it!

Sorry on your grandpa, that is tough.

I am eating what I want, when I want. I will start eating clean January first again. Holidays are just too much for me to behave. I am eating healthier meals though, but no food diary and no calorie counting yet.

Sounds like you have it figured out pretty well. I have some more time off before I start figuring my crap out.

Good on you for getting a coach and getting things figured out EARLY! I hope this winter is kind to you!!!

Ohh...I am so sorry about your grandfather! I really hope he gets better and the problems he has are fixable!

I'm glad things with your coach are going well! Yay!

Things not working: I'm really trying to get in the pool more, but the only time I can go is 4:30AM and I have just been so tried lately! Ugh!

So sorry about your grandfather. It's always tough when those we consider to be the rocks in our lives suddenly aren't. Sending some healing vibes his way.

As for the nutrition thing, I get you there. My husband is a wonderful person, but his eating is far from balanced. I can't for the live of me get him to take on my healthy habits. I'm working with the kids, but that is a tough road too. I made a lot of mistakes up to this point. Those temptations are always there.

The thing that is working for me right now on that front is mindfulness. I've really been trying to pay attention to how I feel after I have good stuff and bad stuff. It has really been opening my eyes to how bad I feel after I eat poorly. My motivation to eat well is much higher now since I can focus on the benefits rather than what I am missing.

It sounds like things are going well for for the most part - and that's a good thing!

You really sound like you're getting a handle on the things that aren't working for you - good for you!!

I have trouble with the partner who has no interest in eating healthy either... his idea of healthy is some pineapple on his pizza...

And that jar of peanut butter that talks, that's not working for me either...!!

I'm trying to lean up during the off season (starting with losing my taper pudge), but its hockey season. I have a hard time not drinking beer during hockey season.

Sorry to hear about you grandfather.

We change the clocks back on Nov7th and I cannot wait!!! It is so hard getting up now when it is pitch dark....agggghhhh.

Glad that the running is going so well!

Thank you so much for the Pug Treats. They arrived last night and Ernie and Bailey went nuts. Ernie ate his in like a minute. It took Bails like an hour and Ernie just sat in front of her pouting the entire time because he wanted more. It was so funny!!! Thank you Mandy!

Sorry to hear about G-pa and hope he recovers soon. The hardest part is being a spectator and not be able to do anything.

The food thing...X2 what TS said. My plan is to avoid as much 'bad' as I can and look for opportunities to eat 'good'. In the end, I eat mostly in the middle......

Congrats on your Bike-HR test. As you know, I have been training with HR for several years and it I heve been making steady improvements all along - I am certain you will too.

I am so sorry about your grandpa. I will keep him and your family in my prayers.

I totally hear you on the eating thing. I have 2 boys (my son and hubby) who have not interest whatsoever in eating healthy! That makes it very hard on me but that is what I am trying to work on. If I have any success I will try and share my secrets!

I agree about having a coach... it's definitely THE best investment I've put into my training.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandpa's health problems... Try to be a rock and be strong for your family and grandpa during this time. I will keep him in my prayers.

I was nodding my head with every. single. bullet on your list! I know when I ate the best (and thus run the best) is when I wiped out ALL crap from my house b/c it's just tooo tempting to have it sitting there. I get a few things now for my kids' lunches but I know where it is and tend to invade when starving, instead of eating that apple. Grr. And the coach...I had a personal trainer for about 4 years, and it was the best 4 years of my running (and I AM a coach).

Sorry about your grandpa! I'll keep your family in my prayers. Based on your post about him, he reminds me a lot of my own grandpa.

As for your nutrition, I'll share one of my wife's favorite sayings: "A well balanced diet is a cookie in each hand." :)

And it seems like you’ve identified some solid strengths and a few weaknesses with ample time to bring everything up to speed in time for Lake Placid.

I am sorry to hear about your grandfather.

I saw this show not too long ago, and it freaking figures I can not at this time remember what it was, but it was about you eating healthy while others in your family does not, and gave tips on how to work around this. As soon as I remember (like at 2am, thats when we remember stuff we forget) I will pass it forward.

I'm with you on the food and the early, even though my cold is warm compared to your cold. I have failed at writing down my food for the last two days, but I hope to recover next week.

Your grandad sounds like the guy I talked with Thursday on the Chase Pond Road who's a Viet Nam vet who was running dogs for rabbits ,and who drove 1000 miles for a 1 week experience although he is riddled with cancer from Agent Orange...its a inner thing that says, "do it while you can", and "enjoy it while you can". Also the elderly couple I saw on an ATV with their orange vests and cooler on the back...enjoying themselves.., how long can you do things you enjoy!!!

I hope your grandfather is feeling better...I hope to be putting up 4-5 cords of wood when I am 90. That is impressive.

I continue to work on the nutrition side and have somewhat brought my husband and kids over to eating somewhat clean. Sugar is still my enemy. I am reading The Beck Diet Solution working on the cognitive side. trying to keep making forward progress.

My husband and I are thinking about getting a coach soon...just need to find the one that is best for us.

It's so hard to watch our grandparents get old.. I hope that he is better soon... my gma is the same way. She hurt herself washing windows on a stool outside.. she's 95. Hugs to you both.

The eating thing... like others have said. In that little food journal of yours write how you feel after your 'indulgences' so you can see how they make you feel. I have a hard time not eating in teh evening too... you could do a sticker chart like Sonja! :)

Sorry about your grandfather. After reading your post from last January, I understand how difficult his situation must be for you. Hang in there, show him how strong you are now because of his presence! Take care!
