Clipless Initiation

I was bragging to my boyfriend Thursday night about how I just seemed to take to the clipless pedals because I haven't had one of those "initiation falls" at a stop sign that I have been hearing about.

I was really excited, probably more excited than I really needed to be because I am very clumsy, and if anyone was going to forget to unclip at a stop sign, it would definitely me be.  But I had to mention that it hadn't happened to me yet.

Silly girl.

Friday after work I grabbed my bike, ran outside and clipped in.  I toppled over in my own driveway, not even moving.  At all.  I looked around to see if anyone saw. The streets were empty. I checked my bike.  It was OK.  The only thing bruised was my ego.

I rode some hill repeats on Saturday, I was feeling really strong and capable.  On one of the repeats, I climbed to the top of the hill and as I was making a turn, I fell over.  I don't even know what I did wrong.  Laying down, still attached to my bike, I unclipped and looked around for witnesses.  Again, no one.  Cool.  The bike was OK too.  Just a wee little scrape on my knee, no one will even notice.

But alas, karma wasn't done slapping me around for my smack talk.

I met up with my friend Molly to ride the Pirate Triathlon bike course with her and her friend Lauren.  We approached a stop sign at a busy intersection, they stopped and unclipped, waiting for the cars to go by so we could cross.

I took a different approach.  I stopped and tipped over.  Equally effective, and it actually helped traffic to clear because people had to stop their cars so they could point and laugh.  After Molly and Lauren were done laughing at me they asked if I was OK (I was, more importantly, so was my bike).

So I am officially initiated.  I hope for the last time in a while!
I hope everyone had great races this weekend, I am looking forward to everyone's race reports.

You fell three times. You are done. Three falls is the rule :)

Lol, I did the exact same thing. Once at a service station, and once in my mum's driveway... after the exact same conversation with my partner. I am sure I've had enough falling now.

Admittedly, by the second time I had worked out how to twist to avoid doing too much damage :)

With 3 falls I think Karma actually borrowed from you and owes you some smooth sailing...

HAHAHA, I am not laughing... at you, I am laughing with you! Man did you get smacked with bad karma or WHAT?!

You poor thing, I know what its like to just be tipping over on the bike and be like, unclip... unclip... UNCLIP YOU NUMSKULL! Sigh, I did it in front of our TRI club the one morning :(

It gets the best of us, good spirits though, you have a great sense of humor!

Pretty funny! At least you walked away from it relatively unscathed. And your friends did just what friends are supposed to do--laugh at you! Hopefully it will be the first/second and last time for you. I hate to say it in public, but I've yet to have my moment like that.

You just passed the initiation. Until you fall over from not unclipping you are never really yet a triathlete. Welcome to the club. haha.

Ditto with TRI-James. That's when you have arrived, unclipping and falling the other way!!

Ha! Thanks for the great comments guys! I really felt like such a dork the third time. I figured someone tightened my cleats...yeah, that is it.

ZIPPY! You dare tempt the clip gods? :)

Congrats on stepping up to the next level of cycling! You've officially been initiated. You are in the club now and can never go back. Not one person can tell you that they've never fallen over with the clipless pedals...except MissZippy...lucky girl!

Dude, you had me laughing, I'm sorry. Karma is a bitch and your karma train just pulled into the station. I'm glad you are ok.

Sweet that NeoSport hooked you up.

Welcome to the club, WE ALL HAVE DONE IT, and anyone whos says they havent are either really, really, really new or are lying to you. You know, this makes you a superhero on the bike, spent this mouch time on it and this last week as the first fall. And you did it in classic biker fashion, step one - see how many people saw you, step two, make sure the bike is ok, step 3 - make sure you are ok

Been there, done that. You really can't help but laugh and roll your eyes. Glad you're ok!

My wife wanted to see what the clips felt like on her bike and just fell over. Not even 5 seconds on the bike, wheels didnt even move. BROKE HER WRIST. So it could be worse. Lets keep laughing at those falls because they are small! There is gonna be more!!!

When I first put clipless pedals on my mountain bike I failed to lower the tension setting. I lost my balance out on a trail and the feet were not coming out. I went over the handle bars and landed with the bike on top, feet still securely attached. I was pretty lucky because I didn't break anything.

Ha, I fell over on the first day out riding my new bike and then it seemed like every other ride whenever I had to stop suddenly. I think it took me 6 months to finally stop falling :-P

This cracked me up. Love this post. One day I'll brave the bike [not the cycle class] well maybe not after reading this. ;)

Look at it this way - at least you're coordinated enough to clip in. Me? Not so much....

Don't feel bad, I fall when unclipped. I was happy to read this though, it made me laugh. I'm not laughing AT you, I'm laughing with you, really I am. :-) stupid clips
